How Our Calculator Works

The Georgia Food for Health Nutrition Needs Calculator is based on USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2020-2025) recommended weekly produce intake standards, adjusted for household composition and specific dietary health considerations. The calculator estimates the total pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables your family should consume weekly for optimal nutrition, then calculates the cost differential between average retail grocery prices in your Georgia county and the no-cost produce available through our mobile pantry program.

Average retail produce prices are sourced from the USDA Economic Research Service's quarterly Fruit and Vegetable Prices report, with regional adjustments based on the Georgia Department of Agriculture's county-level food access index. Rural counties in South Georgia, where our mobile pantry network is most active, typically face produce prices 12 to 18 percent higher than metro Atlanta due to limited retail competition and higher transportation costs in food desert areas. This pricing gap means that families in the communities we serve stand to benefit the most from our free produce distribution.

Dietary adjustment options reflect the specialized nutrition protocols used in our Medically-Tailored Meals program. Selecting a dietary consideration adds appropriate supplementary items to your recommended produce box, such as low-glycemic legumes for diabetes management, low-sodium vegetable selections for heart-healthy diets, or certified gluten-free grain alternatives. These additions are based on the American Diabetes Association Exchange Lists, the American Heart Association DASH Diet guidelines, and the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney-Friendly Dietary recommendations.

Understanding Food Access in Georgia

Georgia ranks 12th nationally in food insecurity, with 1 in 8 Georgia residents and nearly 1 in 5 Georgia children lacking consistent access to adequate, nutritious food. Rural South Georgia counties face disproportionately high rates of food insecurity, with some counties reporting food insecurity rates exceeding 25 percent of the total population. The convergence of limited grocery retail access, high poverty rates, transportation barriers, and elevated chronic disease prevalence creates a compounding cycle of nutritional inequity that demands systematic, community-embedded solutions.

Our mobile pantry model directly addresses the transportation barrier that prevents many rural Georgia families from accessing fresh produce. Rather than requiring families to travel 20 to 40 miles to the nearest full-service grocery store, we bring the produce directly to their community on a reliable weekly schedule. Combined with our recipe cards, nutrition education materials, and cooking workshops, we provide not just the food itself but the knowledge and confidence to prepare it in ways that support long-term health outcomes for the entire family.
